Overview

As executive director of the Moses Lake Business Association, I was responsible for supporting downtown businesses, coordinating public events, and maintaining relationships with members, sponsors, and local government.

Initial Challenge

When I stepped into the role, the organization faced damaged relationships, low sponsor engagement, limited partnerships, and unstable revenue. Several key stakeholders no longer viewed the association as a reliable or professional partner.

The core challenge was to rebuild credibility before the organization could strengthen sponsorships and grow revenue.

Approach

I made relationship repair and community engagement a central leadership priority. Meeting directly with stakeholders, recruiting new members, and improving communication.

One example involved the local police department. Previous event practices had created friction around downtown street closures. I changed the process by coordinating closures in advance, securing city approval, and ensuring that event logistics were handled properly.

When I invited the police department to participate in our Halloween event, the police chief was initially reluctant because of past experiences with the organization. After seeing that the event was managed respectfully and professionally, the department became more willing, and eventually eager, to participate in future years.

Results

By consistently following through and treating stakeholders as partners, the association repaired important relationships, established new partnerships, and improved its standing in the community. This focus on outreach, professionalism, and clearer communication led to annual revenue increasing by 40% in the first year driven primarily by sponsorship donations.

Key Takeaway

The revenue growth was not the result of networking alone. It came from rebuilding trust through clear communication, professional execution, and consistent follow-through.
